INTERNATIONAL TOURISM PROGRAM

Two years of experience in various travel-related practicalities.
Solid English skills and knowledge of tourism.
Our goal is to become a "travel producer.

Students will acquire the English language skills commonly required for tour operator work in Japan and abroad and for guiding tourists visiting Japan in English. By learning about tourism resources, students will acquire a broad knowledge of Japanese and foreign cultures, history, geography, arts, customs, and events, and develop the ability to relate, understand, and communicate these aspects of Japanese and foreign culture and history. Along with the "How non-Japanese see Japan" perspective, students will also deepen their multicultural understanding. The three main points of the program are to "acquire the language skills to be used as an interpreter guide or overseas tour guide," "develop the hospitality mindset necessary to serve customers through actual tour guide work," and "enhance planning and proposal skills through the creation of attractive tours. Using the study of the travel industry, which is a peaceful industry, as one means, we aim to develop human resources who can create new encounters and value through various connections with domestic and international destinations.

MORE

One of the features of the Department of International Tourism is that there are many fun and educational practical training programs. My fondest memory is the "graduation trip planning presentation," in which we created a tour from scratch. Our team spent eight months planning a honeymoon in the Bahamas, an island nation in the Caribbean. We created an album to help students visualize the contents of the tour and received advice from a travel agency specializing in Central and South America as we refined our plan many times. When we finally won the grand prize, we were so happy that we almost cried.... In addition, I experienced a variety of fieldwork such as "Interpreter Guide Training" in Asakusa, "Hiking from Stations" in collaboration with East Japan Railway Company, and "Tour Conductor Training" to experience being a bus tour conductor. Support for qualification acquisition is also generous, allowing students to acquire the specialized knowledge and skills necessary for the tourism industry while having fun at the same time. Mr. Sakazaki really helped me with my job hunting activities. He corrected my entry sheets for dozens of companies and gave me daily interview practice. Because he was always there for me, I was able to continue my job search without giving up. In the end, out of the three companies I received job offers from, I chose Meitetsu Kanko Service because I thought I could grow the most. I would like to plan more and more exciting travel plans for our customers.

MORE

I am from Hakuba Village in Nagano Prefecture, which is known as one of the best tourist destinations in Japan. Due to the recent increase in demand for inbound tourism, I enrolled in the International Tourism Department because I wanted to improve my English conversation skills and work in the local tourism industry. Many of the classes were practical workshops, and my most memorable experience was the presentation of my graduation trip plan. As team leader, I gathered my team members in between classes and planned an aurora observation tour in Finland, Northern Europe. Although we sometimes had conflicting opinions, we learned the importance of respecting each other's opinions and cooperating with each other. Other good memories include training in Taiwan to obtain the "Chief Comprehensive Itinerary Manager" certification and tour operator tour training. All of these classes allowed me to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the tourism industry while having fun.
My job search focused on the travel, lodging, and railroad industries, and because of my familiarity with trains, which I use every day, I decided to work for the Tokyo Subway, which supports the economy of the capital city of Tokyo. Currently, as a conductor on the Hibiya Line, I am responsible for door operations, responding to abnormal situations, and in-train announcements. I sometimes have the opportunity to explain to foreign tourists how to get to their destinations in English, and I will never forget the joy I felt when they praised me with the words "Nice English! I feel that the English skills I acquired at Kanda Institute of Languages are now being put to good use. I am now studying hard to become a driver, but one day I would like to try my hand at activities that will benefit the tourism industry in Hakuba Village.
