Canang Sari

　　This month, let’s talk about canang sari. In this photo, we can a small basket made out of leaves. Inside the basket are flowers of different colors. These small baskets of flowers are actually offerings to the gods!

今月はチャナンサリを紹介します。この写真に写っているのは、葉っぱでできている小さいバスケットです。その中にはカラフルな花が入っています。これらは実は、神様への贈り物（供物）なのです！

　　The tradition of canang sari can be seen on the island of Bali in Indonesia. It comes from the Balinese Hindus, who place these handmade baskets at temples and on the streets. One basket usually has four colors of flowers: white, red, yellow, and blue/green. Each color represents a god from the Hindu religion.

　チャナンサリというのは、バリ島（インドネシア）の伝統文化です。バリ島のヒンズー教徒はこのような手作りバスケットを、お寺や道においておきます。ひとつのバスケットには普通、白?赤?黄色?青（緑）のそれぞれの花がはいっています。これらの色はヒンズーの神様のシンボルです。

　　Every morning, Hindu families will clean up the last day’s baskets, before putting down new canang sari. In addition to being a gift, these baskets symbolize appreciation, and a wish for peace.

　ヒンズー教の人々は毎朝、前日のチャナンサリを片づけてから新しいものをおきます。チャナンサリは贈り物の意味のほかに、感謝の気持ちと平和の願いをあらわしています。
